Paint & Coatings - Terms
Product Tiers
Product tiers are defined by end-user pricing in the local country market. Typically split by premium, mid and low tier, however in some markets, there is also the existence of super-premium categories for products that deliver more than a typical premium product.
Paint & Coatings - Market Definition
Automotive OEM coatings
Automotive OEM coatings include coatings used for cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles and other automobiles. Coatings applied on aircrafts are grouped under “Other Industrial coatings” and coatings used for pre-finished metal sheets and plastic bodies of automobiles are not included in this segment. Automotive coating typically consists of a electrocoat(basecoat), a primer and a topcoat(clearcoat).
Automotive Refinish coatings
Automotive refinish coatings include all those coatings applied on automobiles (cars, buses trucks etc) and their parts including body collision repairs subsequent to the original coatings, applied in automotive OEM plants.
Can Coatings
Can coatings include coatings applied on beverage cans for both decorative and protective purposes. Coatings are applied on the inside of the cans to prevent the metal from reacting with the contents of the can and on the outside for decorative purposes.
Coil Coatings
Pre-finish metal coatings, or coil coatings, are pre-applied on continuous metal sheets, strips and coils which are later sold to the OEM manufacturers ranging from gutters, appliances to automobile and electrical components manufacturers.
Decorative Coatings
Otherwise known as architectural coatings, this segment includes all those coatings applied on new and existing buildings be it residential or commercial or industrial or any other type of building for decorative purposes. Products reach consumers (painters, contractors, project owners etc) either through wholesalers, retailers or sometimes directly depending on the requirements. Frost & Sullivan’s classification includes “Do it Yourself” (DIY) paint, architectural timber finishes and road marking paint also under this category. These are usually thinner layer coatings unlike protective or industrial coatings.
Marine Coatings
These coatings are applied on new and existing commercial ships, vessels, cargo ships etc and mostly anti corrosive or anti fouling coatings are preferred. Coatings for offshore oil rigs and equipments are included under protective coatings.
Powder Coatings
According to Frost & Sullivan’s paint segment classification, powder coatings have been included in the market type by application as it is a big market by itself and fast emerging in Asia. Powder coatings are used in a variety of applications that includes all those coatings where the resins and pigments in their dry, formulated state and are sprayed on the parts or the surface to be coated.
Predeco Coatings
Pre-decorative products usually refer to coatings/materials used for surface preparation (leveling and finishing of uneven substrate) or restoration of surface (holes or joints) before basecoat and topcoat are applied. This would include putty, skim coats and various types of fillers.
Protective Coatings
Also known as heavy duty or high performance coatings, these coatings are applied on steel structures, steel bridges, off shore oil rigs and equipments, chemical & petroleum plants, piping and other structures where anti corrosive coatings or other coatings with high resistance to wear and tear are required. Application consists of a much thicker film (compared to decorative), typically 3-4mm. Resin technology includes polyurethane, polyester and epoxy types. Examples: heat resistant coatings for pipes and flares, heavy duty floor paint at factories, warehouses or airport hangars and high performance coatings for oil rigs and related equipment.
Industrial Wood Coatings
This segment includes those industrial wood coatings used for in-factory coating of wooden surfaces, including wooden furniture, wooden flooring and other wooden surfaces that need to be coated. Cellulose lacquers, thinners, binders etc are included in this category. They are usually transparent protective type coating.
Other Industrial Coatings
This segment includes all other types of coatings that do not fall under any of the above mentioned categories. This typically includes general industrial coatings, plastic coatings, electronic coatings, aircraft coatings and others.
